The objective of the assignment was to develop a reference document that can be used to inform investment in irrigation within Kenya’s drylands with specific focus on the Daua, Tana, Turkwel and Kerio Rivers basins and the Merti Aquifer while providing information and recommendation on the impact of irrigation development on the existing social system.

The specific objectives were:

· To establish the total area suitable for open furrow irrigation along Daua, Tana, Turkwel and Kerio River basins based on the existing data on soil river flows and rainfall.

· To establish the environmental viability and cost effectiveness of irrigated crop farming utilizing water from the above rivers and aquifer and based on results of above data.

· To establish the potential risk of irrigated agriculture along the above rivers and the Merti aquifer.

· Determined the total potential crop production for the areas;

· Carried out an economic viability analysis of irrigation development;

· Carried out an environmental viability analysis of irrigation development;

· Determined the potential impacts of irrigation development along the rivers and Merti aquifer;

· Established the potential risks of irrigation development with reference to depletion of the aquifer and downstream flows, agriculture and pastoralist conflicts and the associated negative social impacts;

· 30 ,000ha identified for irrigation in the 6 counties

· Provided recommendations on how the positive impacts and the negative impacts can be mitigated.

The project involved undertaking of topo and water resources survey, design of appropriate greenhouses and associated drip irrigation system including fertigation & automation system, business plan preparation, design of water reservoir to hold150,000m3 of water harvested from runoff and overflow from a seasonal river. The construction phase involved construction of the reservoir with surrounding compacted earth dam wall, construction of greenhouses, laying of the conveyance system and installation of drip system, rehabilitation of access roads and rehabilitation of swamp for fish production.

The consultant was responsible for business plan development, Feasibility study, planning, and design and overall supervision. Initial farm management activities during the first production activity.
